Arabic Language: Modern Standard Arabic courses include beginning, intermediate, advanced, journalistic and literary Arabic. Activities in Arabic include Moroccan Arabic, cultural acitvities, clubs, field trips, immersion actitvities. Arabic language courses carry 6 to 8 semester credit hours.
North African Studies: 6 week
summer session (06 June-19 July). Courses offered include:

Columbia’s Arabic Summer Program provides intensive instruction in the Arabic language through multimedia materials and activities designed to situate the language in the context of cultures in which
it is spoken. The language of instruction is Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), but students also have opportunities to hear and speak various colloquial Arabic dialects.
Experienced instructors use a communicative approach that emphasizes listening and reading along with speaking and writing. Activities designed to teach listening and speaking spring from real situations and current events.
The program includes:
• Readings of Arabic short stories, poetry, and current newspaper articles
• Live television and radio broadcasts from the Middle East, movies, tape recordings, the Internet, video clips, and access to interactive instructional facilities
• Trips to acquaint students with the magnificent Middle Eastern heritage on display in museums and libraries of New York City. Visits to Middle Eastern neighborhoods and restaurants, and lessons in Middle Eastern cookery Students in Elementary and Intermediate Arabic are encouraged to take both sessions, but with permission from the director may take one session.

An eight-week summer program providing intensive study in Arabic language and culture from the beginner through the intermediate level. During the first half of the course, students learn the Arabic script, the basic rules of Arabic grammar, appropriate vocabulary, as well as reading, oral, and aural skills commensurate with the elementary level. The second part of the class explores advanced structures of grammar, syntax, and expression. All courses take place on Drew University’s scenic campus, located just 30 miles from New York City.
This credit program is open to advanced high school students, undergraduates, graduate students, working professionals, and adult learners. Students who have completed beginner-level Arabic studies are welcome to join at the mid-point of the program

In an effort to further its commitment to promoting dialogue and understanding, MideastWire.com is pleased to announce the launching of “The Beirut Exchange.” The three-week program will engage undergraduate and masters level students from around the world in a multifaceted discussion of some of the key issues facing the region.
The program rests on three tracks:
Academic - Participants will attend a series of lectures and colloquia led by leading academics and public intellectuals. Topics will include: International law in theory and practice in the Middle East; The United Nations as peacekeeper and mediator; Engaging political Islam; Pax Syriana in Lebanon; Asymmetrical conflict: the July 2006 Lebanon war; The Dubai model and its impact on the Middle East.
Language - Participants will have the option of attending 45 hours of Arabic language instruction at the Saifi Institute for Arabic Language in Beirut. Modules for both colloquial and formal Arabic will be available at different levels.
Dialogue with Leaders - Participants will have the opportunity to meet, listen and engage social, political and economic leaders from across the spectrum in both Lebanon and Syria – with a particular (though not exclusive) emphasis on exposure to leading Islamist and opposition currents.

With the support of the Spanish Ministerio de Cultura, the Arxiu de la Corona d'Aragó, the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, the Institució Milà i Fontanals (CSIC), the Reial Acadèmia de Bones Lletres de Barcelona, and the Institut Europeu de la Mediterrània, a 4-week NEH Summer Institute for college and university professors on the theme will be held in Barcelona (Spain) from. Twenty-four US college and university professors will take part in a series of interdisciplinary workshops led by eight outstanding scholars, including: Jonathan Bloom (Boston College), Ross Brann (Cornell), Richard Bulliet (Columbia) Anthony Cutler (Penn State), Peregrine Horden (Royal Holloway); Maria Rosa Menocal (Yale), David Nirenberg (Chicago), and Julio Samsó (Barcelona). The Institute will be held at the Palau del Lloctinent in the heart of Barcelona's Old City, and accommodation will be provided at the beach-side Campus del Mar. We welcome applications from professors or all ranks and in a range of fields, including, but not limited to History, Literature, Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies, Jewish Studies, Religious Studies, Art History, Philosophy, Comparative Literature, and "national literatures" of the Mediterranean. Pacific Arabic Resources is a secular, non-political institution devoted to the teaching of the Arabic language. Founded in 2000 and rated “Best Place to Learn a Language” by SF Weekly, we are the only comprehensive Arabic institute in the Bay Area, with a full range of course offerings in Standard Arabic and several dialects, as well as culture and history courses.
Our summer intensive programs condense one year of college-level Arabic into an eight-week course with 3.5 hours of Arabic instruction five days per week. We are pleased to offer a beginner course as well as an intermediate course corresponding to second-year college Arabic. The courses are open to youth, college students and adults. Our curriculum balances verbal skills with written and we expect all students to speak in class and become conversant in Arabic.

Summer Study Abroad in Morocco

Wake Forest University’s summer study abroad program is based at the Arabic Language Institute in Fez (ALIF). All students take a language course taught by ALIF instructors (6 hours) and a course taught by a Wake Forest University faculty member (3 hours). The course for summer 2008 is “PHI 160: Islamic and Western Political Philosophy, Past and Present.” Language course offerings are Beginning Arabic, Intermediate Arabic, or Intermediate French. Weekend excursions are tentatively planned to Meknes, Volubilis, Moulay Idriss; Middle Atlas (Azrou, Umm ar-Rabi‘a); Desert excursion (overnight); and Rabat (overnight). The 4-day excursion at the end of the program takes students to Marrakesh, Essaouira, and Casablanca. While in Fez, students are housed with homestay families according to the language they choose; they stay in hotels during overnight excursions.

The Zaytuna Summer Arabic Intensive provides introductory- and intermediate-level students with a rigorous complete-immersion language experience in an Arabic-only environment, integrating the acquisition of listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills at an accelerated pace. It focuses on the intersections and continuities between classical (fus'ha) Arabic and Modern Standard Arabic, placing a strong emphasis on acquiring a solid foundation in classical Arabic grammar while developing smooth conversation and reading skills.
•Level 1 will equip beginning students with Arabic reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills as well as a solid foundation in formal Arabic grammar and morphology. Level 2 will enhance students' understanding of the rules of Arabic grammar and morphology, expand their vocabulary, and increase their familiarity with Arabic expressions.
•Arabic instructors include Abdullah bin Hamid Ali, Dawood Yasin, Usama Canon, and Khalil Moore.
•Visiting scholars who will address topics on the impact of Arabic throughout history include Imam Zaid Shakir, Shaykh Hamza Yusuf, Dr. Hatem Bazian, Dr. Sulayman Nyang, Ustadha Intisar Rabb, Dr. Khalid Blankinship, and Dr. Kenneth Honerkamp.
