Students will study Modern Standard Arabic at the beginning, intermediate, or advanced level 4 hours per day, 5 days per week at the renowned Arabic Language Institute of Fes (ALIF). All levels are welcome, including those students with no prior knowledge of the language. Students will also enroll in a course taught in English by Nabil Boudraa, visiting faculty member from Oregon State University, "American Representations of Morocco". This course will explore American representations of Morocco through literature, cinema, and music over the last two centuries and what those perceptions mean for Morocco and America today. The society of Al-Andalus in the Middle Ages was made up of three main groups: Christians, Muslims and Jews. Granada is still a microcosm of these three cultures in one city.This program is designed for students at the intermediate and above level of Spanish, who are interested in improving their language skills and learning about the religious, artistic, and cultural background of Al-Andalus and the Iberian Peninsula. Students take a grammar class (3 credits) as well as a civilization, art and culture class (3 credits). Activities include Arabic calligraphy, Andalusi ceramics, and sampling Andalusi and Sefardi cuisine.

Columbia’s Arabic Summer Program provides intensive instruction in the Arabic language through multimedia materials and activities designed to situate the language in the context of cultures in which it is spoken. The languages of instruction is Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) but students also have opportunities to hear and speak various colloquial Arabic dialects.
Experienced instructors us a communicative approach that emphasizes listening and reading along with speaking and writing. Activities designed o teach listening and speaking spring from real situations and current events.
Program features: Readings of Arabic short stories, poetry, and current newspaper articles; live television and radio broadcasts from the Middle East, movies, tape recordings, the Internet, video clips, and access to interactive instructional facilities; trips to acquaint students with the magnificent Middle Eastern heritage on display in museums and libraries of New York City. Visits to Middle Eastern neighborhoods and restaurants, and lessons in Middle Eastern cookery. Summer 2009 Arabic Program (8 credits)

Students will study Arabic at the DMG Language Center in Rabat, Morocco with the center’s faculty for four hours a day – from 9:00 am to11:00 am and from 11:30am to 1:30pm - for four weeks. While the program is located in Morocco, students will not be learning Moroccan Arabic, they will be learning Modern Standard Arabic. Students will receive 4 credits from Drew for this component of the program. All levels are welcome, including those students with no prior knowledge of the language.
The other 4 credits will come from a simultaneous course taught by Drew Arabic professor Gretchen Head in English on Culture and Society in Morocco which will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:00pm to 6:00pm and will include three weekend excursions to different Moroccan cities. Students will need to purchase the books for this part of the program before their departure and will need to bring their laptops with them as there is no computer access at DMG.
Housing and Meals
Students will be housed in homestays primarily with DMG instructors. Approximately three students will be placed in each homestay. Students will receive breakfast and dinner from their host families and will be responsible for their own lunches.
Weekend Excursions
Students will go on three overnight weekend excursions, traveling by train. The first will be to Fez (3 hours from Rabat), the historical cultural capital of Morocco with the most extant intact old city in the Arab world. They will take a guided tour of the old city, see the oldest university in the country, dating back to the mid ninth century, and learn about the lasting effect of Andalusian culture on the city. The second will be to Marrakesh (5 hours from Rabat), in the South of the country, which is home to Jama’ al-Fna, a UNESCO heritage site. Here they will learn about the history of Jama’ al-Fna, and study the effects of tourism on what is now the most popular city in Morocco. The third will be to Tangier (5 hours from Rabat), in the North of the country, where they will learn about the literary culture of the city’s international zone period, a time in which Tangier hosted some of the U.S.’s most famous authors, including Tennessee Williams, Jack Kerouac, William Burroughs, Paul Bowles, Allen Ginsberg, and Truman Capote.

$4,200, which will cover airfare, tuition, housing, and two meals a day.

This unique Internship Program begins with a week-long seminar in Jerusalem where leading Israeli and Palestinian experts, representatives of Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs), peace activists, and private sector and government officials will address the group and share their perspectives on the dynamics of Israeli-Palestinian relations. Site visits will be made to settlements in the territories, refugee camps, government offices, and cultural institutions. For the remaining eight weeks, students work for four/five days per week—eight hours a day in either the Palestinian territories—Ramallah, Bethlehem—or Israel—Jerusalem, Jaffa, Tel Aviv, Haifa, Nazareth, and other locations. LAU proudly presentsthe 13th Annual SINARC program. The SINARC program at the LAU Beirut campus offers four levels of intensive courses in Arabic language and culture: Elementary, Upper Elementrary, Intermediate and Advanced.
An intensive eight-credit course in Lebanese dialect is also offered (with sufficient enrollment). Formal instruction in language is enriched by immersion in authentic cultural context. Cultural activities include weekly lectures on topics related to Arab and Lebanese politics, history, society and culture, as well as excursions to historic, tourist and cultural sites in Beirut and throughtout Lebanon.
The program is held entirely at the Beirut campus where students are housed in air-conditioned double-occupancy rooms. Arabic Immersion & Study Abroad in Jordan

1. Intensive Arabic Immersion (8 credits). Taught by Yarmouk University, AFL-trained professors. Incorporates an innovative strategy of "local-guest" student partnerships that are valuable for cementing in class instruction through practice and homework assistance, not to mention cultural immersion and lasting friendships.
2. Middle East Studies (8 credits). In this program, a number of courses are offered on a variety of topics-refugees, Arab-Israeli conflict/peace, archaeology of Jordan, Arab culture, Jordan's economy/development, legal environment for business, and even soccer.
Our primary relationship is with Yarmouk University but, as in our Intensive Arabic Immersion program, we employ the most qualified professors from across the country. Most of our faculty members hold PhDs and terminal degrees from European or American universities.
3. Independent Study & Research. Especially for students writing on topics that benefit from the context in Jordan. We welcome not only MA and PhD students working on their theses or dissertations but also undergraduate students doing independent studies, senior theses, capstone projects, honors theses, or research papers. These students will have a common cultural immersion dimension but we will tailor our assistance to suit the particular needs of the participant. During the program the student will have the benefit of an in-country faculty advisor as well. NDU is happy to announce its Summer Arabic Program which is held on its main campus located 15 km North of Beirut, 5 minutes away from the coastal city of Jounieh. This year the program has been expanded to five weeks, and offers 4 levels of study: Elementary, Preparatory, Intermediate and Advanced. Intensive courses are given from Monday to Thursday to allow students to take advantage of the area during the long weekends. Students earn 6 transferable credits upon successfully passing the courses.
The program includes cultural activities on campus as well as in the vicinity, and organized tours to some of Lebanon’s most well-known tourist sites such as Byblos, The Cedars, and Jeita Grotto. Students are also treated to social events which introduce them to Lebanese traditions; they share traditional breakfasts before their classes and chat over lunch with professors and other students.
Summer Arabic Program students are invited to take part in all NDU’s regular summer activities and are given access to the library and sports facilities on campus. Students also enjoy free wireless connection from the dorms and a free e-mail account upon receipt of their student I.D. Accommodation is in the new NDU dorms which are air conditioned and have 24 hour security service.

The Scholars at Risk Network (SAR) is an international network of universities dedicated to promoting academic freedom and defending the human rights of scholars worldwide. Through offering direct assistance to scholars, research, advocacy and capacity-building, SAR members contribute to creating a global community respectful of academic freedom, freedom of inquiry, freedom of expression and related values.
SAR is seeking summer interns to contribute to a variety of aspects of our work, including: advocacy, fundraising/development, core casework (direct and indirect assistance to scholars), international event-planning and outreach.
Graduate students and final year undergraduate students in law, human rights, international affairs and related fields are encouraged to apply. Language skills desirable. 35 hour/week commitment preferred for 10 weeks over the summer. Students at SAR member universities will be given priority.

An intensive six week course (with one additional week of orientation and evaluation) for Advanced Arabic language students who have completed at least two years of formal Arabic training at colleges and universities.Teaching Modern Standard Arabic to advanced students with the goal of enhancing functional usage of the language through the study and analysis of the media: print, broadcast, internet, film and literature. Six weeks in Salalah, one week in Muscat. Classhours: 4 hours a day, 5 days a week, for 6 weeks = 120 classroom hours, not including Arabic films, topical lectures in Arabic and language teacher-accompanied excursions.
Program Cost: $6,900 [Tuition = $3800; Room and partial board (breakfasts) = $3100]. Additional meals, personal spending money, insurance and international airfare are not included. The program is limited to 25 students. All undergraduates or graduate students who have completed two years of college-level Arabic are eligible to apply. Successful candidates will have a strong interest in current events and have demonstrated by their essay that they are serious students of the language.
