American Association of University Professors

Iris Molotsky Award for Excellence in Coverage of Higher Education


The purpose of the award is to recognize and stimulate coverage of higher education nationally and to encourage thoughtful and comprehensive reporting of higher education issues. The AAUP Award is given for outstanding coverage of higher education exhibiting analytical and investigative reporting. Entries will be judged on the basis of their relevance to issues confronting higher education. The winner will be selected by a panel of judges composed of journalists, faculty members, and administrators in journalism and communications. The winner will be recognized at a ceremony at the AAUP Annual Meeting in June.

Entries for the 2012 AAUP Award must have been published between January 1 and December 31, 2011. Entries may be single articles or a series, but editorials and columns will not be considered for the award. Submissions may be made by media organizations or employees. Applicants bay be self-nominating. Each application must be accompanied by an entry form. Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar

Center for International and Regional Studies Post-Doctoral Fellowship
Location: Doha, State of Qatar
Term: August 2012-July 2013

The Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar's Center for International and Regional Studies (CIRS) invites applications for the 2012-2013 post-doctoral fellowship. The fellowship will support a recent Ph.D. recipient in any discipline working on the Middle East. Priority is given to projects with demonstrated relevance to the Persian Gulf.

The fellow resides at Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar. In the absence of teaching responsibilities, the fellow is expected to work on turning his or her dissertation into a book manuscript for publication. Normally, post-doctoral fellows also prepare a manuscript to be considered for publication in the CIRS Occasional Paper series. The recipient participates fully in the academic and intellectual life of the CIRS and Georgetown University-Qatar, including delivering occasional lectures and taking part in the CIRS’s academic seminars and conferences. Georgetown University post-doctoral fellows also benefit from interaction with a community of scholars in Education City who teach in the other branch campuses of Carnegie-Mellon University, Northwestern University, Weill Cornell Medical College, Texas A&M University, Virginia Commonwealth University, and University College-London.

The term of the award runs August 1, 2012, through July 31, 2013. Applicants must have completed a PhD (in hand) between August 1, 2009 and July 31, 2012. The fellow will be given access to the University’s library, office space and equipment, and administrative support. Pending review of the final draft of the book manuscript, CIRS may provide support for a subvention agreement with a reputable academic press.

Compensation, benefits and other terms of employment are highly competitive. The package includes stipend, housing, roundtrip airfare to Doha, health insurance, and car allowance.

Interested candidates should submit a cover letter, a current curriculum vitae, three letters of recommendation (including one from the chair of the dissertation committee), and a short synopsis of the PhD dissertation. Also, candidates should provide a statement outlining the precise nature of the intended work during the period of the fellowship, the final product’s significance for the relevant literature, and when the completion of the project for publication may be expected.

Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar


Center for International and Regional Studies Visiting Scholar/Researcher

The Center for International and Regional Studies (CIRS) at the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar invites applications for the 2012-2013 Visiting Scholar/Researcher position. The position is open to mid-career and senior scholars in all disciplines working on any area of the Middle East, with priority given to those working on the Gulf.

This is a nonresidential fellowship. The Visiting Scholar/Researcher travels to CIRS in Doha three times during the academic year for one to two weeks each time. (Dates are negotiable.) While in Doha, the recipient participates in the academic and intellectual life of the CIRS and Georgetown University’s campus in Qatar. This includes a presentation at the CIRS Monthly Dialogue Series, authorship of a CIRS Occasional Paper, and, participation in meetings and discussions with Georgetown faculty and students. The fellow is given access to the University’s library, office space and equipment, and administrative support during these visits. CIRS covers all expenses related to the trips, including business class airfare to and from Doha, accommodation, meals, hotel, and transportation in Doha.

Interested scholars should submit a cover letter, a current curriculum vitae, names and contact information for five references, and a statement describing the proposed publication and related research to be pursued under the fellowship. The Institute of International Education's (IIE) Scholar Rescue Fund (SRF) is pleased to announce a call for applications for threatened scholars whose lives or work are endangered in their home countries. Fellowships support temporary academic positions at safe universities, colleges and other research institutions anywhere in the world.

Who can apply:
Professors, researchers and public intellectuals from any country, field or discipline may apply. Please refer eligible candidates and forward this announcement to any academic colleagues who may be interested. 

  • Qualifying applicants are currently facing or have recently fled from direct and immediate threats.
  • Preference is given to scholars with a Ph.D. or other highest degree in their field and who have extensive teaching or research experience at a university, college or other institution of higher learning.
  • We strongly encourage applications from female scholars and under-represented groups.

Students or professionals seeking funding to pursue academic studies or training are not eligible.

How The Scholar Rescue Fund Works:
Fellowships support visiting academic positions for up to one calendar year. Awards of up to US $25,000 are issued with individual health insurance coverage and professional development assistance. 
 
Fellowships are disbursed through dedicated host academic institutions, which provide direct support and a safe haven for scholar-grantees. In most cases, hosts are asked to match the SRF fellowship award by providing partial salary/stipend support and/or housing, material support for research/publications, and other in-kind assistance.

Institute of Turkish Studies

2011-12 Grants Program

The Institute of Turkish Studies (ITS) is pleased to announce its 2011-12 grant competition in the field of Turkish Studies. The following grant opportunities are available only for United States citizens (or those who have acquired permanent resident status in the US) who are currently affiliated with a university in the U.S. The institutional grants are available only for educational institutions located in the United States.

Sabbatical Research Grants for faculty members conducting research in the field of Turkish Studies during the course of their sabbaticals. This new category award will be awarded to one or two scholars each year in the field of Turkish Studies in the amount of $25,000 per recipient.

Dissertation Writing Grants for graduate students in the social sciences or the humanities who have completed all the requirements for the PhD except their dissertation by June 1, 2012. These grants are for advanced students who have finished the research stage of their dissertation. Stipends range from $5,000 to $10,000.

Summer Language Study Grants for graduate students in the social sciences or humanities for summer travel to Turkey for language study in preparation for graduate research at an established Ottoman or Turkish language facility. Normally, the recipients of these grants are expected to spend a minimum of two months in Turkey. Stipends generally range from $2,000 to $3,000.

Post-doctoral Summer Travel Grants to scholars in the social sciences and humanities for travel to Turkey to carry out research projects. Normally, the recipients of these grants are expected to spend a minimum of four weeks in Turkey. Maximum award is round-trip airfare to Turkey.

Grants for Undergraduate Study for students who wish to participate in study abroad programs in Turkey. These awards will be made to institutions, which will be responsible for their distribution to qualified applicants. ITS welcomes applications from institutions seeking to either expand or develop overseas programs in Turkey. Maximum award is $10,000.

Matching Seed-Money Grants for New Positions in Turkish Studies for institutions. ITS offers matching seed money grants to universities for the establishment of new positions in any discipline in the field of Turkish Studies. Universities are expected to make commitment to establish a tenure-track position for this position. Maximum award is .50 FTE of a junior faculty appointment.

Matching Seed-Money Grants for New Positions in Turkish Language Instruction for institutions. ITS offers matching grants to universities to hire instructors to teach Turkish language. Universities are expected to match these grants for three years. Maximum award is $20,000 per year for three years.

Matching Lecture, Conference, and Workshop Grants for university-sponsored lecture series, conferences, and workshops in Turkish Studies to be held in the U.S. Maximum award is 50% of the funds required to cover the costs of these events.

Grants for the Publication of Scholarly Books and Journals to cover part of the publication costs of scholarly books and journals in the field of Turkish Studies to be published in the U.S.

Teaching Aids Grants for the development of instructional materials in the field of Turkish Studies, such as language teaching materials, maps, slides, etc.

Grants of Library Acquisitions to institutions in the US for the purchase of books related to Turkish Studies (maximum award $2,500 per institution).

Journal of Middle East Women’s Studies 2012 Book Award

The Journal of Middle East Women’s Studies (JMEWS) Book Award has been established by the Association for Middle East Women’s Studies (AMEWS) to recognize and promote excellence in the fields of Middle East women’s or gender studies, broadly defined. The JMEWS Book Award will be offered annually to a scholar within these fields for a solo-authored book. Books published (copyrighted) in 2011 will be considered for the 2012 award. The competition is open only to books published in English.

The JMEWS Book Award will be given to the author whose work is judged to provide the most significant and potentially influential contribution to Middle East women’s or gender studies. Books of exceptional courage and potential impact beyond the field will be given special consideration.

The first JMEWS Book Award will be publicly announced at the AMEWS business meeting at the MESA Annual Meeting in 2012. The winner will receive a $1,000 cash award and a plaque. Books that do not receive the award but are considered exceptional will receive honorable mentions at the ceremony.

The JMEWS Book Award Committee strongly encourages submission of nominations for the competition. Nominations must come from one or more individuals (not organizations or publishers) in the form of a letter of nomination verifying the impact of the particular work on the field of Middle East women’s or gender studies. Self-nomination is not permitted, and works submitted without an accompanying letter of nomination will not be considered. Signed copies of the nomination letter as well as five copies of each nominated book should be sent to the Award Committee members: Journal of Middle East Women’s Studies, Council on Middle East Studies, The MacMillan Center, Yale University, PO Box 206208, New Haven CT 06520-8206.

The JMEWS Book Award is sponsored by Yale University’s Council on Middle East Studies through funding awarded by the U.S. Department of Education’s Title VI grant. Submission deadline: May 15, 2012.

2012 Graduate Student Paper Prize

The Journal of Middle East Women’s Studies (JMEWS) Graduate Student Paper Prize has been established by the Association for Middle East Women’s Studies (AMEWS) to recognize and promote excellence in the fields of Middle East women’s or gender studies, broadly defined, and to encourage academic engagement and excellence in these fields among students at the graduate level. The prize will be awarded to the individual whose work is judged to provide the most significant and potentially influential contribution to Middle East women’s or gender studies. Papers of exceptional courage and potential impact beyond the field will be given special consideration.

The JMEWS Graduate Student Paper Prize is offered annually to a graduate student who has solo-authored a paper in these fields. The competition is open only to papers written in English. Papers must be between 6,000 – 11,000 words, including a 150-word abstract and a reference list. Papers must be submitted as a Word document or pdf file. Submissions should include a title page that lists the author’s name, institution, and program of study and the manuscript’s title.

The JMEWS Graduate Student Paper Prize will be publicly announced at the AMEWS Annual Meeting at the MESA Annual Meeting. The winner will receive a $500 cash award and a plaque. The winner will also be invited to submit the paper for publication in JMEWS.

Submissions for the 2012 prize must be submitted via e-mail to jmews@yale.edu. The JMEWS Graduate Student Paper Prize is sponsored by Yale University’s Council on Middle East Studies through funding awarded by the U.S. Department of Education’s Title VI grant. Deadline: May 15, 2012.

 

Open Society Scholarship Programs

Global Supplementary Grant Program (GSGP) 2012-13

The Open Society Foundations Scholarship Programs is pleased to announce the Global Supplementary Grant Program (GSGP) for the 2012–13 academic year. GSGP offers supplementary grants of up to $10,000 USD to students from select countries in Southeastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, Mongolia, the Middle/Near East, and South Asia. The purpose of the program is to enable qualified students to pursue doctoral studies in the Humanities and Social Sciences at accredited universities throughout Asia, Australia, Europe, the Middle/Near East, and North America.

Eligibility
The Global Supplementary Grant Program is available to citizens of the following countries: Albania, Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia, Croatia, Egypt, Georgia, Iraq, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Macedonia, Moldova, Mongolia, Montenegro, Nepal, Palestine, Russia, Serbia, Syria, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan.

Students pursuing doctorates in the medical, physical, chemical, technical or natural sciences as well as fine or performing arts are not eligible for this grant. Ineligible fields of study include: Business Administration, Management Training, Computer Science, Finance/Banking, Marketing, Engineering, Hard & Natural Sciences (Physics, Biology, Chemistry, etc.), Mathematics, Medical Sciences.

GSGP grants are for students pursuing doctorate degrees only. Students admitted to master’s programs with the intent to continue, but who are not clearly admitted into a Ph.D. program, are ineligible. Students must be pursuing their studies at a university outside of their home country.

Please note that this is a supplementary program not intended for full funding. Applicants must be able to demonstrate additional support from other sources.
