HIRING PROCESS ALERT
Recently, the US Department of Labor disqualified some faculty job placements. The DOL has not yet updated its rules to take into account the digital medium or digital job advertisements. In order to be deemed full and adequate, searches must be advertised in a printed version in print medium whether or not it is obvious that an electronic advertisement would be the most far-reaching and effective. DOL’s antiquated rules have caused considerable grief to a few recently hired foreign nationals from a number of different countries and the departments that hired them. It is not apparent that the DOL has targeted any particular discipline or region of origin of candidates. If you are hiring, advertise in at least one well-known print venue in addition to appropriate electronic lists. Note the following deadlines for the print version of MESA’s Newsletter.

Aarhus University, Denmark
Arab and Islamic Studies /Associate Professorship
One-year position with likely opening for a tenured position.

The Arab and Islamic Studies Unit at Aarhus University, Denmark, invites applications for a one-year position. At the end of this one year, there will probably be an opening for a tenured position, for which the successful holder of the one-year position will be considered sympathetically.
The successful candidate will have a PhD in any relevant field, research at the postdoctoral level, teaching experience and publications, and a research focus on the modern Arab or Islamic world which includes some aspect of Islam. The ability to teach a range of introductory courses on the modern Middle East is essential, as is the ability to teach lower-level courses using texts in classical Arabic such as the Quran. The likely subsequent tenured position will also involve teaching advanced courses at the MA level and some PhD supervision.
The successful candidate will be appointed in a new and expanding Arab and Islamic Studies Unit within Europe’s largest department of the Study of Religion. Aarhus University is a research university, and the standard teaching load is six hours per week over two 13-week semesters. Further information on the Unit may be found at http://www.teo.au.dk/aisu, and questions may be addressed to the Unit Coordinator, Mark Sedgwick, mjs@teo.au.dk.

Applications are invited from all interested scholars, irrespective of gender or citizenship. For the one-year position, no knowledge of Danish is required of applicants who are not Danish citizens. Teaching may be conducted in English. For the likely subsequent tenured position, there will be a requirement for non-Scandinavian citizens to learn Danish within two years of appointment, and appropriate support will be given for this purpose.

Applications should be addressed to Mark Sedgwick, Arab and Islamic Studies Unit, Aarhus University, Taasingegade 3, 8000 Aarhus C, Denmark. The letter of application should be accompanied by a full CV, one sample course outline and one sample publication. Please also give the names and contact details (including email) of two referees.
Review of applications will begin January 15, 2010, and will continue until the position is filled.
