The Academic Freedom Fund is dedicated to supporting the activity of MESA in defending academic freedom and freedom of expression within the fields of Middle East studies in the United States. It also will promote a broader understanding of the importance of freedom of expression in maintaining a healthy democracy and a competent citizenry. While many activities may emphasize the university as an arena in which unfettered debate takes place, they will not be restricted to this arena; the intent of the fund is to support and encourage dialogue among academics, journalists, policy makers, community members, lawmakers and advocates. The underlying principles of all efforts will be that the free flow of information, critical analysis and refining argument must be sustained, and that individuals should be accorded equal access to any debating arena without regard to their personal status, country of origin, religious persuasion or policy preference. All AFF initiatives will be reviewed by the MESA Committee on Academic Freedom. MESA's Board of Directors will authorize recommended actions.
