“Colleges Object
to New Wording in Ford Grants”
Daniel Golden
The Wall Street Journal, May 4, 2004
(full
text)
In response to claims that the Ford Foundation,
one of the largest private donors to American universities,
contributed funds to an organization that sponsored anti-Israel
activities, both the Ford and Rockefeller foundations added
clauses to their grant agreements that prohibited funds from
being directly or indirectly spent to support terrorism, violence,
or bigotry. Several major universities protested this clause
because it could interfere with cultural events and studies
on campuses and allows non-academic organizations to control
the funding of universities.
