“Academic Freedom Under Fire”

(full
text) (pdf)
American universities make up the
majority of the world’s best universities because of
the academic freedom that scholars are allowed to practice
in the United States. Now, however, dissenters are being targeted
by congressmen, the public, and the media, exposing a trend
to regulate ideas rather than inappropriate actions. Universities
are not designed to appease one’s preconceived notions,
they are meant to challenge and inspire. If recent motions
to control the opinions of faculty in higher education are
successful, universities will no longer be able to serve the
community with innovation and discovery. (Back
